Start with a clean shelf
Empty the entire closet. Wipe down shelves, vacuum the floor, and only return what you actually use. Linen closets become catchalls for expired sunscreen, random hotel toiletries, and pillowcases without mates.
Be ruthless with duplicates. Three sets of sheets per bed is plenty for most households. Donate worn towels to an animal shelter and keep only the pieces that feel good against your skin.
Fold for visibility
File-fold towels so the finished edge faces out, or roll hand towels into neat cylinders. For fitted sheets, tuck the elastic corners into each other to form a flat bundle before stacking.
When you can see every item at a glance, you stop buying things you already own. Visibility is the secret to a linen closet that stays organized.
Zone by frequency
Keep daily-use towels at eye level, guest linens on a higher shelf, and seasonal items like heavy blankets in breathable bins at the top. A single labeled basket per shelf keeps small things — washcloths, travel kits, extra soap — from drifting.
Add a sachet of lavender or cedar blocks between stacks so opening the door feels like a spa ritual.
